The project

A book about a grandfather who was deeply admired and largely absent.

A 300-page book researching the hidden relationship between me and my grandfather, a Mossad agent who was both deeply admired and largely absent from my life.

Hands holding Tzav Issur Pirsum, a grey cardboard book with a black label Three copies of the book stacked, showing the exposed sewn binding

The process

Interviews, state archives and boxes of personal papers.

Over a semester, I conducted interviews with family, friends, and Mossad agents, dug through state archives and personal boxes, and gathered everything I could. I wrote all the texts in the book myself.

Blue binders labelled Irangate and Switzerland Envelopes labelled by hand, stacked on a shelf A plastic box full of envelopes and documents
Passports, letters, photos and ledgers laid out on a table

The concept

Documented events, set against my own perspective.

The book places documented events from my grandfather’s life against my own perspective on the values they raise: loyalty, duty to state vs. family, absence, and what it means to miss someone you never really knew.

The book

Archive and memory, page by page.

A handwritten note about lost passports over a family photo in Paris, 1964 A text spread with redacted, highlighted lines and side notes
A spread of my grandfather on a road, set against the sea and a lighthouse
Spread of annotated passport pages from 1961 and 1976 Two portraits of my grandfather: Morocco 1961 and Israel 1998
An open spread: a Moroccan landscape with two archival photos placed on it
